Hello, I am Valéria Rocha, an artist from 28 Patas Furiosas, and I am here to talk a little bit about Noises. 

Noises is the group’s new scenic experiment. We have been active in São Paulo for the last 10 years, developing a research that moves between theater and visual arts. Since 2020, we have also been exploring a thematic study on what the city of São Paulo dreams about. However, we approach dreams from the perspective of Brazil’s Indigenous peoples, especially the Xavante, Yanomami, and Guarani peoples. 

As part of this research, the group conducted a series of workshops with São Paulo residents from different territories and ages to reflect on dreams. And there is no way to think about dreaming in this city without considering the sleep, the city’s lights, the city's noises, and time itself. Through these workshops, by exchanging dreams with children and engaging in conversations about sleep, the desire emerged to create a performance specifically for childhood audiences—our first work dedicated to this public: Noises. 

This is one of the actions within our project, supported by São Paulo’s Lei de Fomento ao Teatro (Theater Promotion Fund). The piece interweaves three main themes: memory, grief, and dreams. The story follows Virgínia, a young girl who has lost her grandmother and begins to dream of another girl. In Virgínia’s world, she is cared for by an adult who is grieving and is having difficulties to stand up, to organize her balance, and to communicate with the child. Meanwhile, in the dream world, Virgínia encounters another child who is lost and searching for her home. 

Together, Virgínia and this dream girl embark on a journey, encountering a jaguar, a headless body, a scientist-guide, and an Earth that truly moves—shifting and carrying our home with it. In the end, Virgínia discovers that the other girl is actually her grandmother. She wakes up and shares her dream with the grieving adult, and by listening to the dream, the adult finds comfort in her grief. The child offers the adult new perspectives on dreaming, memory, and loss.
