Hello everyone, this is Fábio Osório Monteiro. I am an actor, dancer, and also a baiana de acarajé, and because of that, I’m here to talk about Fireball.
Fireball is a performance I do alongside Cíntia Santos, an incredible artist from Salvador who performs entirely in Brazilian Sign Language. Throughout this dialogue we establish with the audience—while I prepare the acarajé, in real-time—we navigate through personal and collective memories, the memories of Black people, emotions, historical contexts, and the story of the food itself. Acarajé is a dish of axé, a sacred food of the orixás, also known as acará.
After the performance, fully dressed as a baiana de acarajé, we invite the audience, and the acarajé is available for sale to those who want to experience it firsthand. So, Fireball is a performance you quite literally consume—and maybe that’s what makes it so special.
Bio:
Black, northeastern, LGBTQIAPN+ and Candomblecist, Fábio Osório Monteiro has been developing his career for 26 years in works based on emotion, humor, faith and politics. Nominated for the 33rd Shell Theatre Award in the Best Actor category (2023), Fábio Osório is an artist interested in thinking about the black body on stage.
Active in different artistic languages, Osório is also a dancer, producer and baiana de acarajé, affiliated to ABAM (National Association of Baianas de Acarajé and Mingau). Born in Salvador-BA, he takes his hometown anywhere in the world. Osório dances to feed his body and makes food to feed his soul.
Osório is a versatile and independent artist who lives multitudes and multitudes. With a degree in Business Administration (UFBA), a Master's degree in Dance (PPGD-UFBA) and a PhD in movement and charisma (Bahia has already given me a ruler and compass!), Fábio Osório Monteiro has collaborated with several internationally renowned artists: Marcio Abreu, Jorge Alencar, Cristian Duarte, Denise Stutz, Cristina Moura, Renato Linhares, Alex Cassal and Xavier Le Roy.
He was co-founder and member of Dimenti Produções from 1998 to 2022. He is currently a collaborator with Cia Brasileira de Teatro (PR) and Grupo Foguetes Maravilha (RJ).
