PEOPLE INVOLVED IN THE PROCESS:
Cafi Otta

Hey, everyone! My name is Cafi—like café, but with an I. I am the one irresponsible for the show Carlos Filipe in Trouble, and I was really happy when Farofa invited me to talk about the creative process and the development of the show.
I keep thinking about how my show is a street performance—a street circus show filled with clowning. And I believe clown performances are always in process. The process is truly infinite because, with each performance, we discover and rediscover things that have already been done or, sometimes, completely new things that might happen only in that specific show. It’s a performance based on truth, on the relationship with the audience and the space where it is presented. And that changes everything, all the time—it’s always transforming.
That’s why I love choosing this format, this platform—the street. I always say that when I pass the hat at the end of a performance, in the shows where I do that, for me, the circus is really just an excuse to create these encounters with people in public spaces—passing the hat is just part of it.
Beyond that, I truly believe in what my fellow Brazilian Milton Nascimento says in his song (and I’m happy to have been saying this for a long time, not just now after the injustice he faced at the Grammys): "Every artist must go where the people are." And I wouldn’t trade the street, or these encounters with such diverse people in so many different places, for anything.
That’s it! Long live Farofa—let’s go!
Bio:
I've been in the circus world for over 35 years, so get ready for a long story... Just kidding, I'll keep it short!
I'm a juggler, unicyclist, and clown. Throughout my career, I’ve worked with various circus groups, and from 2004 to 2023, I was a member of Grupo Namakaca.
I've participated in and organized numerous circus conventions in Brazil, including Praiana, Carnavalesca, and even the Brazilian Convention—I was involved in its 4th edition… and now, in 2024, it's already in its 22nd!
In 2012, I starred in the show Jucazécaju, directed by Carla Candiotto. That same year, I created my solo show, Carlos Filipe em Apuros, which has toured various theater and circus festivals across Brazil and even had a tour in Mozambique—and it's still going strong!
Beyond my artistic career, I also have a sports side: since 2012, I've been dedicated to unicycle marathons. I've completed over 10 races in places like Germany, Norway, Cuba, Canada, France, the U.S., South Korea, and, of course, Brazil.
In 2018, I was featured in the HBO series Minha Vida é um Circo. And guess what? The second season is on its way and should be airing soon!
