My name is Tony Hewerton, I am a performing and dance artist. I’m from Bahia, but I’ve been living in Rio for about twenty years now. I’ve been working with Alan for almost ten years in Companhia Rec, traveling across Brazil and abroad. Now, we’ve decided to solidify our partnership and create Cordeiros—with him directing and both of us performing.
Alan
From my perspective, Cordeiros is a choreographic piece about memories, recollections, and attempts. It is inspired by various hip-hop movements, popular festivals, and mass gatherings—group movements, soccer fan celebrations, rock concerts, or rap shows.
Tony
The name Cordeiros comes from Salvador’s Carnival. Cordeiros are the people who hold the ropes, separating those who can’t afford an abadá (the exclusive party attire) from those who can, and who therefore receive all the structure and security of the event. But in the context of our piece, Cordeiros represents Carnival itself—it is the person pulling the rope as both a tool for work and for celebration. Cordeiro is also religion—the Lamb [Cordeiro] of God, who takes away the sin of the world. And Cordeiro [Lamb] is the animal, the offspring of a sheep and a ram. It is a word in the plural, just like our memories—of the past and the present, of the many Brazils that shape our movements.
Alan
From there, the piece transitions into estalinhos (percussive rhythms), into the pace of terreiro (Afro-Brazilian ritual spaces). We incorporate influences from the baianas, from Bumba-meu-Boi, which is also deeply connected to the Folia de Reis celebrations. We bring in rope games, the act of sweeping the yard to prepare for the party—a classic scene. That rising dust, people sprinkling water on the ground.
Bringing all of this together—with a lot of hard work and care—this is, if not the most personal piece I’ve ever created, certainly one of them. We’ve been on this journey for over ten years in dance.
This is Cordeiros, and we are excited to share it with you. Thank you!
