Jukebox is a scenic-musical performance that has been in development for two years. From the very beginning, this work has been dedicated to songs, rhythmic musicalities, and musical pieces capable of awakening the collective force of resistance, celebration, and struggle.
The project has gone through different formations and structures, and now it is a solo performance directed by Jaya Batista. In this version at Farofa, we are also bringing in some dramaturgical layers that were not as explicitly present before. We had already included Krenak as a reference from the start, but now Jota Mombaça, Judith Butler, Edouard Louis, and Leda Maria Martins have also become part of the work.
What we will present is a synthesis of what we are building. It is not a premiere yet, but the essence of the piece will be there—the themes we want to explore and the structure of the work. This is an oracular performance with a mutable dramaturgy. Each show will take on a different form because the audience will decide its flow. These elements are firmly established, and that is what we will be sharing with you on the 20th and 21st, as well as from the 13th to the 15th during rehearsals with our provocateurs.
Bio:
CRISTIANO MEIRELLES is an interdisciplinary artist with a career that spans theater, music, dance, and pedagogy, always with popular aesthetics as the guiding thread of his work. Throughout his career, he has collaborated with prominent figures in the artistic scene, such as Georgette Fadel, Márcio Ballas, the Núcleo Bartolomeu de Depoimentos, Roberta Estrela D'Alva, Antônio Nóbrega, Greg Hicks, Chico César, and Renato Borghi. He was also the creator and host of a series on Brazilian culture for the ICL Notícias channel. Currently, his work focuses on researching performative formats that embrace and celebrate dissident identities, seeking new ways of expression in the artistic landscape.
JAYA BATISTA is a director, choreographer, and cultural manager, working in the fields of dance, theater, and visual arts. Among his recent works, the direction of the scenico-musical performance caravana LIVRE! (Salvador/BA, 2024), with artists from the Universidade Livre, stands out, celebrating the 60th anniversary of the Vila Velha theater. Currently, his research focuses on the staging and movement of scenic choirs. He holds a degree in Physical Education and Social Sciences from the Universidade Estadual de Campinas (Unicamp/SP) and a master's degree from the same institution. He also has complementary training in Dance and Theater.
