Hello my name is Khazar Masoumi. I am an movie, theater and television Iranian actress. I have lived in Brazil since 2017, but starting in 2022, I had to rebuild my career here due to the public stance I took on political matters, particularly after the Woman, Life, Freedom protests against the mandatory veil in Iran.
The idea of Scheherazade came to me as a dual representation of my origins and nationality in Brazil — how do people perceive that? A nationality that is largely unknown, yet exotic and intriguing. Scheherazade is well known in the West, but few people actually know her true origins. Additionally, One Thousand and One Nights provides a narrative structure that allows me to tell this story, imagining Scheherazade as an Iranian woman in 2025, perhaps living in Brazil.
My collaboration with Lubi was crucial in this creative process. We spent nearly a year together in the ELT directing program, which was not just about his guidance but also about the collective contributions of our peers. While many of the experiences and ideas in this piece come from an Iranian actress living in São Paulo, many are also deeply universal. This work would be something entirely different — something I wouldn’t prefer — if it were merely an "Iranian" piece presented to a passive audience. That’s why Lubi’s participation as director is essential to my original vision.
I hope to see you all soon in person. Thank you, and a warm embrace.
Bio:
Khazar Masoumi, born in Tehran (Iran), from a family of cultural resistance. At the age of 20, she began her career in cinema as the protagonist of a feature film that, banned by the regime's censorship, only premiered 6 years later. Until 2008, she starred in two films and a miniseries in Iran. After dedicating herself to the study of Law, completing a Master’s and Doctorate in France, she returned to her acting career in 2020. Since then, she has performed in two theater productions, respectively in Iran and Switzerland. She has lived in Brazil since 2017.
