Reflux is a play about a movie that failed, a movie that didn’t succeed. Originally, when the film was conceived in 2008, 2009, and shot in 2010, it featured characters portrayed by actors and actresses who talked about how their lives would change when something happened. But they did this while inside a carousel—a ride that spins and spins without going anywhere, creating an illusion of movement, of color, just an illusion.

The funny thing is that, in some way, the film became a hostage of this idea because, like the carousel, the film also spun around, but it didn’t turn into a film. And this notion of failure becomes one of the central themes of the work. It’s a question I ask myself: is failure of something only a perspective on that thing? Is it possible for something to take on a different hue, gain new adjectives depending on new perspectives? That’s why this film moves away from the ambition of becoming a cinema piece and instead takes shape, is tested, in a theater setting, almost functioning as a test screening. Test screenings were those sessions, often in the United States, where producers would invite people to watch a film before its official release to gather feedback, sometimes leading to changes. In this case, it’s a test screening for something that will never be a movie but could have been.
To wrap up, I think it’s important to share a bit of the plot. When I was a child, I had allergies to food coloring and preservatives, so I couldn’t go to parties, eat sweets, or have anything. I lied about it, and over time, I developed Gastroesophageal reflux disease — not sure if because of that, but it certainly contributed. Eventually, I had a surgery to fix that, and due to the anesthesia, I entered a hypnagogic state, meaning between states of consciousness, and it was there that I came up with the idea for the film. And the film would be like this. That’s the summary of Refluxo
