Moce Accent, Please! is a play directed by Jéssica Teixeira, with performance and dramaturgy by me, Yasmin Gomes. It explores accents, addressing this linguistic issue, particularly for actors. However, it is also a play about identity, the creation of stereotypes, and how much we submit to them—something that extends beyond acting into other aspects of life.
This project emerged from my own experience as an actress. I am a Cearense actress, and for many years, I had to hide my accent to fit the Southeastern standards and establish myself in that industry. This experience became the foundation for my research during my degree in Performing Arts, where I realized that this process was, in fact, an erasure—of my identity, my culture. Through this research, I understood that this issue is not unique to me; it affects many actors and actresses from my region who seek to build their careers and claim space in this field.
The play draws a parallel with the character Nina from Chekhov, exploring how external impositions and opinions—those that attempt to define who we should be—impact not only acting but also the way we see ourselves in the world: as autonomous individuals with history, life, and a living identity
