A Classic: KILLED THE FAMILY AND WENT TO THE MOVIES is a process that emerges from the research nuclei of Grupo XIX de Teatro. The specific nucleus was called Cinema as Presence, a research project that I, Luiz Fernando Marques —Lubi— have been developing around these two artistic languages. More specifically, what interests me in both cinema and theater is the presence of the audience — how this presence can transform or take what was pre-conceived in both mediums to a different place.
To conduct this research, we chose two films with a theme that was deeply significant to the artists involved: homoaffectivity. We selected Killed the Family and Went to the Movies by Bressane and A Classic: Two at Home and No Match Outdoors, a short film by Djalma. These two films address homoaffectivity in Brazil in a more explicit way, and we can even say they are among the first Brazilian films to do so. They were made in the late 1960s, in the midst of the military dictatorship, and what interested us in this research was precisely how this theme was treated at the time — placing it in contrast with our perspective here in 2024. The work intertwines these two films with the presence of theater.

For us, presenting this at Farofa makes perfect sense because what interests us most is the audience. Being in a space dedicated to process and creation is a joy for us, as it keeps us moving in the spirit of experimentation that has driven us from the beginning. So, we extend this invitation with great excitement—join us in this madness that blends film, theater, and your presence!
